Tuborg was founded in Hellerup in 1873 by Carl Frederik Tietgen, a leading industrialist of the time. Tuborg beer was first brewed as a pale lager in 1875. The first Tuborg was brewed in Denmark’s first pilsner-type beer in 1880 and was packaged in bottles with a distinctive green label. Tuborg became instantly popular with the Danes and has since grown to become Denmark's best selling beer. These days Tuborg is a real cosmopolitan brand present in more than 70 different countries.
The name Tuborg originally comes from the name Thuesborg ("Thues castle") which was the name of an inn situated in the area of the brewery. This name was kept in the form of the local place names Lille Tuborg and Store Tuborg, which eventually was used for the brewery founded on the location. The street "Tuborgvej" in Copenhagen, Denmark is named after the Tuborg brewery, and is the street where the original brewery was founded.
Tuborg Factories Ltd. began in 1873 as a more wide-ranging public company, manufacturing beer, sulphuric acid, and fertilizer beside Tuborg Harbor outside Copenhagen. Eventually Tuborg focused on beer production, developing pasteurization techniques for beer and pioneering bottled beer sales.
Tuborg initially produced pale lager for the Danish market. It merged with United Breweries in 1894, which then entered into a profit-sharing agreement with Carlsberg in 1903.
At the time of the deal, Carlsberg-Tuborg produced beer, soft drinks, and mineral waters, with interests in breweries in eight countries including Great Britain, Turkey, Malaysia, and Iran. In Denmark alone the company employed 7,600 workers.
Like Carlsberg, Tuborg is also brewed in Nepal, Finland, Greenland, Iceland, Israel, Norway, Portugal and Sweden and more than 88% of the Group's beer sales are generated outside Denmark. The beer is brewed at more than 70 production sites spread over approximately 40 countries at either Carlsberg owned breweries or in breweries in which the Group holds equity stakes. Apart from the local production, Tuborg is also exported from Denmark to a considerable number of countries.
Tuborg sell a variety of beers in over 31 countries including: Tuborg Green, Tuborg Lemon, Tuborg Christmas beer, Tuborg Gold, Tuborg Red, Tuborg Twist, Tuborg Black.
